Augusto Fernández has Remy Gardner and Raúl Fernández to thank for allowing him to spend a second season in the premier class with KTM in 2024
Because the two talents shone in the 2021 Moto2 World Championship in the Red Bull KTM Ajo Team with 1st and 2nd places and a total of 13 wins this season (8x Fernández, 5x Gardner) and were then promoted to the MotoGP World Championship with high expectations in the KTM Tech3 customer team. As a result, Danilo Petrucci was eliminated from the Pierer Group after the only 2021 season, and space had to be made for the new rider duo of Remy Gardner and Raúl Fernández for 2022.
But the first third of the 2022 MotoGP season proved to be extremely laborious for the Australian Moto2 World Champion and the runner-up from Spain, falling well short of expectations, although Augusto Fernández had bagged eight GP victories in the Moto2 World Championship three years ago as a rookie, eclipsing Marc Márquez's previous record (seven wins in 2011).
Red Bull KTM eliminated Gardner and Raúl Fernández from the MotoGP squad for 2023 - and replaced them after just one season at Tech3 with the new Moto2 World Champion Augusto Fernández and returnee Pol Espargaró, who had only managed two podiums in two years (2021 and 2022) at Repsol Honda.
Because the managers at Pierer Mobility AG did not want to be accused once again of having too little patience with undisputed talent, Augusto was given a second chance for 2024, even though he had only shone once the previous year - with fourth place at Le Mans. He very often blew his prospects with dismal starting positions.
However, the hoped-for improvement failed to materialize in the current season, which is why Fernández's MotoGP place for 2025 has been in serious jeopardy since the start of the season – as has that of Jack Miller.
"In principle, Augusto is Moto2 World Champion 2022, which is already a pretty big honour in this sport", says KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer. "It was clear to everyone involved that Augusto might not get off to the same rocket start in the MotoGP World Championship as Pedro Acosta. But you don't get a fourth place in the 2023 Le Mans GP for free. And of course, we built on his Moto2 successes and believed in him."
However, it is now clear that Miller and Fernández no longer have a place in the KTM line-up for 2025. And while Miller could sign up at Gresini Ducati, Fernández is very unlikely to find a MotoGP place.
The reports that there was a chance of a seat in the rumoured new Pramac Yamaha team were unfounded. There were never any concrete negotiations.
Pit Beirer: "We still have 13 Grand Prix ahead of us and are continuing to work intensively with Augusto because we want to improve together in the second and third part of the season."
However, Fernández did not achieve a better position than 17th in the 2023 World Championship with 71 points and is still only 17th in the standings ahead of the Dutch TT in Assen - with a meagre 8 points from 14 races. His outstanding GASGAS Tech3 team-mate Acosta has already scored 101 points after seven Grand Prix and is in a sensational fifth position in the World Championship. The 20 year old will ride alongside Brad Binder in the Red Bull KTM Factory Team in 2025. Two winning riders, Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales, have been hired for Tech3.
Augusto's MotoGP career is therefore coming to an end after two years.
In an interview with GPOne, Hubert Trunkenpolz, member of the board of directors at Pierer Mobility, stated unequivocally: "It was clear before this season that if Augusto didn't improve significantly, it wouldn't work out for him in 2025. We don't need to sugarcoat it. It was always clear: Either Augusto delivers something quite extraordinary in the first races in 2024 - or it's over. That's the way it is! And he knew that."

Augusto Fernández: Kein MotoGP-Deal für 2025
Augusto Fernández muss sich bei Remy Gardner und Raúl Fernández bedanken, dass er 2024 eine zweite Saison in der «premier class» bei KTM verbringen durfte.
Denn die beiden Talente glänzten 2021 in der Moto2-WM im Red Bull KTM Ajo Team mit den Endrängen 1 und 2 und insgesamt 13 Saisonsiegen (8x Fernández, 5x Gardner) und wurden danach mit hohen Erwartungen im KTM Tech3-Kundenteam in die MotoGP-WM befördert. Deshalb wurde Danilo Petrucci bei der Pierer-Gruppe nach der einzigen Saison 2021 eliminiert, für 2022 Platz musste Platz für das neue Fahrerduo mit Remy Gardner und Raúl Fernández geschaffen werden.
Aber das erste Saisondrittel 2022 erwies sich für den australischen Moto2-Weltmeister und den Vizeweltmeister aus Spanien als höchst mühselig, sie blieben deutlich hinter den Erwartungen, obwohl Fernández in der Moto2-WM vor drei Jahren als Rookie acht GP-Siege erbeutet und damit die bisherige Bestmarke von Marc Márquez (sieben Siege in 2011) in den Schatten gestellt hatte.

Weil sich die Manager der Pierer Mobility AG nicht noch einmal vorwerfen lassen wollten, zu wenig Geduld mit unbestrittenen Talenten zu haben, bekam Augusto für 2024 eine zweite Chance, obwohl er im Vorjahr nur einmal brillierte – mit Platz 4 in Le Mans. Sehr oft vermasselte er seine Aussichten durch triste Startpositionen.
Doch die erhoffte Steigerung blieb 2024 bisher aus, deshalb war der MotoGP-Platz von Augusto Fernández für 2025 seit dem Saisonstart stark gefährdet – wie auch jener von Jack Miller.
"Grundsätzlich ist Augusto einmal Moto2-Weltmeister 2023. Das ist schon einmal eine ziemliche große Auszeichnung in diesem Sport", hält KTM-Motorsport-Direktor Pit Beirer fest. "Dass Augusto in der MotoGP-WM eventuell nicht denselben Raketenstart hinlegen würde wie jetzt Pedro Acosta, das war jedem Beteiligten klar. Aber einen vierten Platz beim Le-Mans-GP 2023 kriegst du nicht geschenkt. Und natürlich haben wir auf seine Moto2-Erfolge aufgebaut und an ihn geglaubt.
Doch inzwischen steht fest: Miller und Fernández haben keinen Platz mehr im KTM-Aufgebot für 2025. Und während Miller bei Gresini Ducati landen könnte, dürfte Fernández keinen MotoGP-Platz mehr finden.
Die Berichte, es gebe eine Chance auf einen Sitz im möglichen neuen Pramac Yamaha-Team, waren unbegründet. Es gab nie konkrete Verhandlungen.
Pit Beirer: "Wir haben noch 13 Grands Prix vor uns und arbeiten weiter intensiv mit Augusto, weil wir uns im zweiten und dritten Saisondrittel gemeinsam steigern möchten."
Aber Fernández ist 2023 über den 17. WM-Rang mit 71 Punkten nicht hinausgekommen und liegt auch vor der Dutch-TT in Assen nur auf dem 17. WM-Platz – mit kargen 8 Punkten aus 14 Wettkämpfen. Sein herausragender GASGAS Tech3-Teamkollege Acosta hat nach sieben Grand Prix schon 101 Punkte einkassiert und liegt in der WM auf dem sensationellen fünften Rang. Er wird 2025 neben Brad Binder im Red Bull KTM Factory Team fahren. Für Red Bull KTM Tech3 sind inzwischen mit Enea Bastianini und Maverick Viñales zwei Siegfahrer engagiert worden.
Deshalb neigt sich die MotoGP-Karriere von Augusto nach zwei Jahren dem Ende zu.
Hubert Trunkenpolz, member of the board of Directors bei Pierer Mobility, hielt im Interview mit gpone.com unmissverständlich fest: "Es war vor dieser Saison klar, wenn von Augusto keine deutliche Steigerung kommt, wird es für 2025 nichts mehr werden. Da brauchen wir nichts schönreden. Es war immer klar: Entweder liefert Augusto bei den ersten Rennen 2024 etwas ganz Außergewöhnliches – oder es ist vorbei. Das ist so! Und das wusste er."
