MotoGP: Rumors from Assen: Lewis Hamilton interested in purchasing Gresini

The connection between the Formula 1 and MotoGP seems to be growing closer, and not just because of Liberty Media's acquisition of the motorcycle racing championship.

According to what our colleagues at The Race, have revealed, Lewis Hamilton has reportedly expressed a desire to purchase Gresini Racing and is already negotiating with its current owner, Nadia Padovani, widow of the late Fausto, to take over ownership of the Faenza-based team. In fact, it seems that a member of the seven-time World Champion's entourage was spotted with the Gresini team just last weekend in Assen, where the Dutch GP was held.

We're reporting the news for the record, because we also came to know of this news in Assen but, not having had the time to directly check for a confirmation or a denial from with those involved, we're reporting it as it is. Very often, in fact, rumors arise in the paddock that, in time, turn out to be only dead-ends.

Several of the personal sponsors of the British rider and the Mercedes team, such as Petronas and Monster Energy, which have also been present in the MotoGP premier class for years, could facilitate Hamilton's arrival in the MotoGP. Should the deal be finalized, it would certainly be greeted enthusiastically by Liberty Media as well, since this would represent the perfect occassion to give visibility to the MotoGP, by bringing a good part of the Formula 1 audience closer to the world of two wheels.

The 39-year-old driver, who'll be moving to Ferrari in 2025, is not only the most successful, and perhaps most iconic, driver in Formula 1 history, but also the perfect testimonial for the MotoGP, thanks to his great love for motorcycles. This passion led him to produce a limited-edition model with MV Agusta and ride a MotoGP bike in the famous exchange with Valentino Rossi that took place in Valencia in 2019.

Hamilton can also already boast a good deal of experience as a motorsports team owner and more: he was owner of the X44 team (which raced in Extreme E between 2021 and 2023, winning the title in 2022), and he's also part of the group that took over the Denver Broncos American football team.
