MotoGP: Dovizioso confirms he won’t be racing in MotoGP in 2023: “there's no reason

Andrea Dovizioso's decision to join Yamaha is not giving the hoped-for outcome. The results of the man from Forlì this season leave no room for comments and the first one who is aware of it is himself. This does not mean that he is not trying, but at the age of 36 and after riding a completely different bike like the Ducati for 8 years, the adaptation is proving to be more than complicated.

There are still 9 GPs to go, then he will leave MotoGP for good, at least as a rider. It was Dovizioso himself who declared it in an interview with motogp.com.

"For sure [next year] I will not race, there is no reason to – were his words - I have always said that if I am not competitive, I don’t want to be here, because you cannot enjoy stay there and struggle, especially after 20 years of racing. I haven't tried to find a place for next year. I'm completely relaxed, I've already done a test of how it feels at home - he joked recalling the first half of 2021 – I’m OK but for sure I didn’t want to finish the season like this, but nobody has everything under control and this can happen ”.

Andrea did not hide his current problems and analysed them.

“Every race is a really difficult race because every time I start on the back and everything becomes even more difficult - he explained - Not being competitive is a completely different story from that of my career, it's the difficult thing. It is the first time for me not to be there and it’s difficult to manage, especially practice by practice, race by race becomes more the reality. MotoGP has changed, the bike has changed, competitors have changed, the way you have to ride the bike is different, there are a lot of big and small reasons and if you put everything all together it happens what is happening to me now."

There are also technical reasons. Because Yamaha is winning with Quartararo, but not with all the other riders. Not only Dovizioso, Morbidelli is also going through a complicated moment.

“The Yamaha is quite unusual, you have a really good feeling, you can turn the bike and brake very well, but there is some other parts which are not that good – was Dovi's description of the M1 - If you don't ride like Fabio, it's very difficult to be competitive. If Fabio is winning, there is a reason so this means there is a possibility to be fast, but if the other riders are complaining, it means that there are not many ways to be competitive. For example, the way Morbidelli and I ride is completely opposite: Franco uses more angle every time and doesn't brake hard, the opposite of me, but the results are similar ”.

Confrontation with the Honda is inevitable.

“All the Japanese bikes are struggling, for sure the Yamaha although they won the title last year, but it is just one rider who is fast, the second is always far. That means that the base of the bike is a bit difficult and particular, as was Honda in the last 8 years and I think is Yamaha now" concluded Andrea.
