MotoGP and F1: simultaneous opening dates and 6 coinciding rounds

The two 2017 calendars for the premier championships kick off on 26 March and the final round at Valencia also overlaps with an F1 race

MotoGP and F1: simultaneous opening dates and 6 coinciding rounds

After MotoGP, Formula 1 has also published the calendar for the 2017 season and the two premier categories will have their opening round on the same day: 26 March. The first race of the year is also the first coinciding round, although the different time zones help avoid overlaps. In fact, the two-wheelers will be in Qatar with a night race, whereas the cars will be in Australia.

Fans will therefore be able to enjoy both races without having to switch back and forth. Launching the two championships on the same date has a certain charm, but it may not be the best choice because MotoGP and F1 will wind up taking up the same media spaces.

As you can see from the adjacent calendar, the two championships also share the second date. On 9 April, the bikes will be in Argentina and the cars in China and, once again, the different time zones will help. Then the situation improves. After all, with 18 rounds for MotoGP and no less than 21 for F1, it is practically impossible not to have some dates in common and in 2017 there will be 6 coinciding rounds.

The third will be on 11 June, Barcelona for the bikes and Canada for the cars. The only true ‘almost perfectly’ coinciding time will be on 27 August with Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing at Silverstone and Formula 1 at Spa. It would be conceivable to think that, as happened this year, MotoGP will delay the start so that the two races will not overlap.

The same day (22 October) will also be shared by the Australian and American rounds, as well as for the final MotoGP round. In fact, the Valencia race will be held on 12 November and Formula 1 will be racing in Brazil on that day.

However, the bikes and the cars will not end their seasons on the same day, because the four-wheelers will finish out their year in the United Arab Emirates on 26 November.

One final note: at the moment, both the MotoGP and the Formula 1 calendars are provisional, therefore there could still be changes in the coming months.
